Why choose bulk?
At Pilgrim Farms Cattle Company, we recognize that buying your beef products in bulk is an upfront investment. Quality aside, buying your beef in bulk has many benefits including saving money throughout the year, food security, fresh products, environmental benefits, waste reduction and supporting a locally owned and operated business! Buying beef in bulk also allows for customization with a large variety of cuts to choose from that are not typically seen in super markets. When you have an opportunity to purchase products that support your local community and have a high standard of quality, why would you not want to fill your freezer?!
What Size is Right for Me & My Family?
Quarter Cow – Recommended for smaller families with (1-2) adults and (1-2) small children.
Half Cow – typically provides a full year’s supply of meat for the average family of (4).
Whole Cow - will provide a full year’s supply of meat for a large family that likes their beef or can be split with others. (a popular option is to get a group of friends or family and slit a cow 4 ways!)
A typical hanging weight for our cows is between 600-750lbs (350 for a half, 175 for a quarter)
You can expect to receive around 50-60% of your cows hanging weight in packaged product.
**These weights are approximate and vary per animal***
As a general rule, expect around 50% ground beef, 20% roasts, 20% steaks, and 10% miscellaneous cuts such as stew meat, ribs, and shanks.
Pricing:
1/4 cow = $5.25 / lb hanging weight
1/2 cow = $5.00 / lb hanging weight
Whole cow = $4.75/ lb hanging weight
For Example: If you are purchasing a 1 / 4 beef and the animal has a hanging weight of 750 lbs, you will be paying: $5.25 * 187.50 lbs (750 lbs/4)= $984.38 + $206.25 (processors fee, $1.10/lb for quarter cow, $0.98/lb for half and whole cow) = total cost of $1,190.63 (Price will vary per animal)
What Happens Next?
Once you place your deposit, there is nothing to do but wait for your processing date to come. Which is a perfect time to check out our retail store! Once we get closer to the scheduled processing date, we will send out a cut sheet for you to fill out and return with different cuts and selections you would like. (*Please note, we utilize a standard cut sheet for 1/4 cow orders. If you are interested in a 1/4 and have questions regarding this please reach out.) Once at the processor, the beef will dry age for approximately 14 days. After the 14 days the processor will begin breaking down the beef and butchering by order. Once orders are complete, they will forward us the invoices with each customers hanging weight and their processing fees. We will then add our invoice to the processors and send them out to each customer. From there we will communicate payment method and pickup times.
How Much Freezer Space Do I Need?
1 / 4 cow – 5 Cubic Foot Freezer Space
1 / 2 cow – 10 Cubic Foot Freezer Space
Whole cow – 20 Cubic Foot Freezer Space
Do We Feed Grain?
To continue our commitment to high-quality beef, 4-8 weeks prior to sending our beef to the butcher, we add grain to their diet.
All grain is not created equal and we ensure at this time that we feed a Non-GMO (genetically modified) grain.
This ensures there is not a “gamey” flavor and the meat is tender and succulent to the taste.
